Masonry repointing (tuckpointing) is the removal of deteriorated mortar from brick, block or stone joints and replacement with new, compatible mortar. It restores the wall's ability to shed water and prevents freeze-thaw damage and structural weakening. Statesville Roofing's restoration division has repointed commercial masonry across North Carolina since 2003.
Mortar is designed to be the sacrificial part of a masonry wall. When joints erode, crack or fall out, water gets behind the face brick, freezes, and starts pushing the wall apart. Interior leaks and spalled brick follow.
Repointing done correctly, with the right mortar mix for the age of the building, restores the wall for decades. Done wrong, with mortar that is too hard, it destroys historic brick. We match mortar strength, color and profile to the original.

How often does commercial masonry need repointing?
Well-executed repointing lasts 25 to 50 years depending on exposure. Parapets, chimneys and south- and west-facing walls weather fastest and are often repointed first.
What is the difference between repointing and tuckpointing?
In practice the terms are used interchangeably. Strictly, tuckpointing uses two mortar colors to create a fine decorative line; repointing is the functional replacement of deteriorated mortar.
Can the wrong mortar damage my brick?
Yes. Modern high-strength mortar on soft historic brick causes the brick, not the joint, to fail. We analyze and match mortar to the existing masonry.
